Honouring The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a deeply important day to recognize and reflect on our shared history and the impact of residential schools in Canada.  The significance of the date, September 30, stems from Orange Shirt Day.

"The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30 opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. Every Child Matters, even if they are an adult, from now on." – OrangeShirtDay.org

As a co-operative, UFA places high value on education and awareness and is committed to working with Indigenous leaders and members of the communities we serve to expand our knowledge, while having an earnest, well-intentioned, and respectful approach.

We encourage our teams and members to learn more about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action, including our shared corporate responsibility to provide educational opportunities on the history of Indigenous peoples, including the history and legacy of Residential Schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action report can be found here.

"Reconciliation requires an acknowledgement of the past. As Canadians we all have a responsibility to educate ourselves, and ultimately to create opportunities for a better future," says Scott Bolton, UFA President and CEO.

In honour of The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, UFA is making a donation of $5,000 to Spirit North. This charitable organization uses land-based activities to improve the well-being of Indigenous youth, helping them be unstoppable in sport, school and life. Through the transformative power of sport and play, they help Indigenous youth find the courage to take on challenges, develop leadership skills, improve their health and wellness, discover new talents, and unlock their potential.

In addition to the donation to Spirit North, our recent donation to the Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation supports the parks programs that focus on protection of the land, while celebrating and acknowledging the history and contributions of the Indigenous people of Canada.

We encourage you to take part in a virtual tour of the Tiger Lily Loop at Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park. The tour is led by Traditional Stoney Nakoda Knowledge Keepers, Historians, and Advisors who educate in the Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being.

UFA Farm and Ranch Supply Stores and Petroleum Agencies will remain open on The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and we stand together with our Indigenous friends; grieve with them and recognize it as a day of reflection.
