UFA has a good news environmental story to tell around the remediation of an old, decommissioned petroleum site in Radway, Alta., northeast of Edmonton. By treating the soils onsite rather than a "dig and dump" which is fairly common across the industry, and then reusing the soil as backfill, we were able to save close to $3 Million.
"The nice thing with owning the property was we had the luxury of time and we knew we could remediate it," says Theresa Keenan, Senior Environmental Advisor. "We weren't being pressured by another party to have the site clean within a tight time frame. We were able to treat a lot of the soils and put it back in the hole, rather than hauling it off to a landfill for disposal."
"This is a great example of sustainable leadership. We took the initiative to clean up the site as a good corporate citizen, did so in a cost-effective way, and positively impacted the environment." says Selene Munro, Director, Sustainability. "We have many positive examples of ESG to share. In 2023, I look forward to introducing the ESG Committee and publishing our first ESG report."
